Zbigniew Libera

Zbigniew Libera (born 07.07.1959 in Pabianice, lives and works in Warsaw). In 1982-1983 he was imprisoned (§ 48 of the Martial Law Decree) for printing the underground press. In the 1980s, he co-founded the most interesting independent art circles and ventures in Poland, including the Łódź-based Kultura Zrzuty, the Sternenhoch music group (with J.Truszkowski), the Tango magazine, artistic milieu centered around Zofia Kulik and Przemyslaw Kwiek. In 1987-89 he was a model for Zofia Kulik's photographs. In the autumn of 1989, he embarked on an initiatory "trip east" to Egypt and Israel lasting until the summer of 1990. In the early 2000s, he co-founded the association Warszawski Aktyw Artystów and two art clubs: Baumgart/Libera, and then (together with Mariola Przyjemska and Tomasz Kurzyca) Aurora. Involved in the activities of the Civic Forum for Contemporary Art, whose activities focus on the concerns of artists, their social and material conditions. Libera is considered a leading representative of the critical art trend. In his works he analyzes and criticizes accepted conventions, mass culture, traditional models of upbringing, raises issues of manipulation of reality by the media. Libera's photographs and videos from the 1980s, including Someone Else, Hemaphrodite, Intimate Rites, Mystical Perseveration, How To Train Little Girls were a decade ahead of the wave of body art; In the mid-1990s, he begins to create corrective devices - objects that are transformations of existing products, objects of mass consumption, including the Universal Penis Expander or Body Master. Playset for children under the age of 9. He designs also processed toys, works that reveal the mechanisms of upbringing, education and cultural taming, the most famous of which are: LEGO. Concentration Camp, Ken’s Aunt, You Can Shave The Baby. He creates art books, including: What is the Messenger Girl Doing with poet Darek Foks (publ. Ars Cameralis, 2005, 2nd ed. Ossolineum, 2022), Trotsky’s Ice Pick (published by One Starr Press, 2006), The Gay, Innocent and Heartless (published by Profile Gallery, 2008 ), Art Of Liberation. A Press Study (publ. CCA Ujazdowski Castle 2019 and 2020). Since the early 2000s, he has been mainly focusing on photography, in particular the nature of press photography, how the media shape our visual memory and manipulate the image of history, e.g., the series of works Positives and Masters. In recent years, he has been making large-format photographs, such as Mother, History Lesson, The Exodus of People from the Cities, First Day of Freedom, Polish Hospitality. He has exhibited as part of many group exhibitions and individual exhibitions, including the 45th Biennale di Venezia, Museum of Contemporary Art in Chicago, MUMOK Museum in Vienna, Zachęta National Gallery of Art in Warsaw, and the Jewish Museum in New York. He is also a film director, having graduated from the Andrzej Wajda Master School of Film Directing. He made a feature film titled Walser (2015). He collaborates with theater directors such as: Krzysztof Warlikowski (The African Tales by Shakespeare at Nowy Teatr in Warsaw), Magda Szpecht (The Possibility of an Island based on a novel by M.Houellebecq at TR Warszawa Theatre in Warsaw), Katarzyna Kalwat (Grotowski non-fiction at Teatr im. Kochanowski in Opole and Teatr Wspolczesny in Wroclaw) and Maja Kleczewska (Fury based on a play by E. Jelinek at the Powszechny Theater in Warsaw). This production won the Silver Lion award at the Venice Theater Festival in 2016. In 2018, Hamlet directed by her at the Polish Theater in Poznan and Berek at the Jewish Theater in Warsaw. In 2021, Hlapci based on Ivan Cankar at the Mladinsko Theater in Ljubljana and Face to Face at the Teatr Powszechny in Warsaw. In 2022, Ulysses (based on James Joyce) at Teatr Polski in Poznan. In 2023 The Book of Paradise (based on the only novel by Itzik Manger) directed by Josef Damian Neć at the Jewish Theatre in Warsaw.

He has also curated art exhibitions, such as Artist in Times of Despair. Poland's Latest Art at BWA Awangarda Gallery in Wroclaw, It's Not My Fault That This Sculpture Rubbed Against Me at the Królikarnia - Xawery Dunikowski Museum of Sculpture, a division of the National Museum in Warsaw.  He is also involved in education; in 2006 he gave an honorary Annual Copernicus Lecture at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor (USA) and a so-called mini-course at the institution’s Art Department, from 2008 to 2009 he led the Open Form Studio at the Academy of Fine Arts (AVU) in Prague, and in 2017 he lectured at the National Academy of Dramatic Art in Warsaw.  In the years 2013-2016 he realized, in cooperation with Aleksandra Panisko, an over 50-episode series of programs for TVP Kultura, titled Libera - Art Guide.

The website was created as part of the project of Fundacja Nowych Działań, co-financed by the City of Warsaw. The project consists of the art book STOS ZDJĘĆ, published together with the Museum of Modern Art in Warsaw, and a website dedicated to the work of Zbigniew Libera.
